Chapter 12

Bear frowned. Maybe it was better that she didn’t answer. He hated hearing the word no. Hell, he wasn’t used to no. It’d been a long time since he’d put himself out there. Usually he stuck to the girls that came by the club if he wanted a good time, but he was outgrowing the running around. The long rides, the good booze, and friendship were great, but the gallivanting all night, he was getting too old for that.

It’s not that he wanted to settle down, he probably wasn’t there yet. Sure, a girl by his side, someone to get comfortable with was nice, but he certainly wasn’t looking to have kids and take on more responsibility. He liked the freedom his lifestyle offered. His dad taught him about stocks when he was a teen, and the time and effort left him in a good spot financially. Bear smiled thinking about his father. He hadn’t seen him in ages, but it made him happy to hear about his adventures. He wasn’t wasting away in an old person’s home. He grabbed the bull by the horns and rode it wherever the hell he wanted.

Bear should have said something. Anything. Instead he ate. Screw this. It was a mistake to even mention it. What was he doing, rescuing some lost puppy? Foolish. He knew better. He finally choked out some words. “Pretend I never mentioned it.”

The sincerity in her eyes got to him. “Carter...don’t. I think it’s sweet. You’ve been good to me and deserve better. I’m at the precipice of change. I either fall back into the party lifestyle and we both know what that gets me, or I do something different. I’m not a kid anymore. It’s time to take charge of my life. Time with you would be precious, but being a biker chick, partying, drugs, do you really think that’s a good idea? It’s all I know. It’s comfortable. It’s easy. The problem is, I end up in a vicious circle. I’m an addict. I’m left to pick up the pieces...well, you see. I’ve never wanted to change before. Maybe it’s good that I do. I’m tired. I’m still in my twenties and feel too old in my skin. I’ve lived a hard life, and I’m tired. You understand that, right?”

Bear put his sandwich down. “Recovering addict. You’re going to stay clean. I’m damn proud of you, and happy that you want to get your life together. It’s just that I selfishly want to be a part of it.”

“I don’t know how to walk that line. It’s got to be one or the other. For the first time in my life, I’m afraid to stumble. I’ve done it so much. I’m afraid I won’t get back up, and I’ll live the life of a vagrant. Strung out on heroin, homeless, and digging through dumpsters for food. I’m afraid of how much I love the drug.” She reached up and wiped a tear away.

Bear reached across the table and took her hand.
